Acrylic Panel Maintenance.

PMMA acrylic panels are exposed to UV, weather, and daily use over decades. Unlike glass, scratches and surface crazing can be fully removed — restoring the panel to its original optical clarity without replacement.

Why it matters

Skill, not products, determine the outcome.

Sanding and polishing a large acrylic surface requires trained technicians to achieve an even surface thickness across the entire panel. Spot maintenance — where only the scratched area is sanded — creates uneven thickness compared to the surrounding areas. The thinner spots become blurry and distort images seen through the panel, often making the problem more visible than the original scratch.

Worldbizz technicians work across the full panel surface systematically, starting with progressively finer sandpapers and finishing with a super-fine polishing compound. The result is a uniformly clear panel with no optical distortion — as close to factory condition as the panel’s history allows.

Poolside acrylic panel maintenance

Pool panels

Acrylic panels used in swimming pool applications are largely self-maintaining. The continuous movement of water prevents dust from accumulating on the panel surfaces. Swimmers are barefooted and carry no sharp objects, so light and deep scratches are uncommon under normal pool conditions.

Where maintenance is required — from prolonged UV exposure, minor surface contact, or chemical sensitivity — the sanding and polishing regime removes crazing and restores full optical clarity, making the panel look brand new.

The Dos of self maintenance

The Dos

Flush with water first

Run water over the surface several times to remove dust and loose dirt before any wiping. Stubborn spots can be loosened using a thoroughly saturated cotton cloth while water runs over the surface. Flush the frame as well to prevent moving dirt to the acrylic when wiping the edges.

Use acrylic-specific cleaning products

Use a product formulated for acrylic that removes damage rather than fills it. Worldbizz recommends 3M acrylic polishing compounds for routine surface cleaning.

Use only 100% cotton

Only fresh, clean 100% cotton cloth should ever touch the acrylic surface. Never re-use a cloth — any residual dirt, debris, or dust from previous use will cause fine scratches.

Wipe in vertical strokes

Always wipe in a straight vertical pattern. Circular motions trap remaining particles and leave random round scratches that are highly visible. Vertical scratch patterns are far less noticeable than horizontal or circular ones.

What to avoid

The Don’ts

Never wipe dry acrylic

Wiping a dry surface drags dust and particles across the acrylic, causing scratches. Dry wiping also builds a static charge that attracts more dust.

No synthetic cloths or paper towels

Paper towels and cloths containing nylon or synthetic fibres are abrasive. They leave micro-fine scratches across the surface. Use only 100% cotton.

No solvents or household cleaners

Never use gasoline, benzine, alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, lacquer thinner, or glass cleaner. Common products like Ajax or Lysol contain abrasives or solvents that dull and damage acrylic permanently.

No ammonia-based products

Ammonia-based cleaning solutions eat into the acrylic surface and cause crazing — a network of fine cracks that distort clarity and cannot be reversed without sanding.

No shampoo or soap

Common shampoo and soap cause cumulative damage to acrylic over time. Use water alone if no acrylic-specific product is available.

No petroleum-based wax or filler

Do not use any wax or filler product unless it is specifically formulated for acrylic. Petroleum-based waxes chemically attack the surface.

Acrylic panel maintenance work

Yearly maintenance contract

Keep your panels performing long-term.

Worldbizz offers a Yearly Maintenance Contract for panels we have supplied and installed. Under the contract, our team conducts an inspection of the acrylic panel every six months and performs the cleaning and maintenance regime as required.

Depending on the degree of sanding and polishing required and the surface area of the panel, maintenance works typically take 1 to 3 days. Caution must be taken when using power sanders — acrylic can be permanently damaged by burnishing from a power surfacing tool applied incorrectly. Our technicians are trained specifically for this task.
